A fasting glucose test is a snapshot of your blood sugar at one moment. HbA1c takes a different approach entirely, and understanding how changes how you should interpret it.

The mechanism, in one paragraph

Glucose in your bloodstream attaches to hemoglobin inside red blood cells — a process called glycation. Red blood cells live for about three months, so the percentage of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) reflects your average blood sugar exposure over that entire period, not just today.

Why that makes it harder to "game"

A fasting glucose test can look deceptively good if you happen to eat carefully the day before a checkup. HbA1c can't be influenced that way — it reflects three months of actual pattern, which is exactly why it's the test used to diagnose and monitor diabetes rather than a single glucose reading.
