Why the Same Blood Test Shows Different 'Normal' Ranges at Different Labs
Switch labs and the reference range printed on your report can change, even for the exact same test. Here's why, and how to compare results properly.

It's one of the more confusing moments in tracking your own health: the same test, same value, but the "normal" range printed underneath it is different from what an older report shows.
Reference ranges are method-specific
Different labs often use different analyzers and assay methods to measure the exact same substance. Two methods that both correctly measure, say, creatinine can legitimately produce slightly different reference ranges because of how each method was calibrated.
Reference ranges are population-specific too
A reference range is built from a "reference population" tested by that lab or that method's manufacturer. If the reference population differs — by region, age distribution, or method validation studies — the resulting range shifts slightly, even though nothing about the underlying biology has changed.
What this means practically
- Never compare a value from one lab against another lab's printed range. Always check the range on the same report the value came from.
- A value that's "high" at Lab A and "normal" at Lab B isn't a contradiction — it's two different measuring sticks applied to the same number.
- When tracking a trend over years across multiple labs, the trend in the value itself matters more than whether each individual report's flag says high, low or normal.
The practical fix
The cleanest way to compare across labs is to look at where in the range each result falls (e.g., "20% into the range" vs. "80% into the range") rather than the raw number — which is exactly the kind of normalization that's tedious to do by hand across a folder of PDFs, but straightforward once someone (or something) does it for you.
