CBC Explained: What Every Line on Your Complete Blood Count Report Means
Hemoglobin, WBC, platelets, MCV — a complete blood count is one of the most commonly ordered tests and one of the least explained. Here's what each line means.

A Complete Blood Count (CBC) is probably the single most-ordered blood test — and one of the most intimidating reports to read, with a dozen unfamiliar abbreviations on one page.
The three cell lines a CBC tracks

Hemoglobin isn't the whole anemia story
Hemoglobin gets the most attention, but two other numbers change what a low hemoglobin actually means:
- MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume) — whether your red cells are small, normal, or large. Small cells point toward iron deficiency; large cells point toward B12 or folate issues.
- RDW (Red Cell Distribution Width) — how much your cells vary in size, often an early signal before hemoglobin itself drops.
WBC differential: which cell type is elevated matters
A "high WBC" flag is incomplete without the differential underneath it. A rise led by neutrophils reads differently from one led by lymphocytes — one detail a summary flag alone won't tell you.
What's worth tracking over time
A single CBC is a snapshot. What's genuinely useful is watching hemoglobin, MCV and platelet count across every report you have — a slow downward drift over a year is a very different finding from a single low reading during a cold.
