The blood test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the storage form of vitamin D circulating in your blood. It's the standard way to assess vitamin D status, distinct from the active hormone form your body converts it into.

Why deficiency is so common despite sunlight
Sun exposure alone doesn't guarantee good vitamin D status — indoor-heavy lifestyles, sunscreen use, darker skin (which needs more sun exposure to produce the same amount), and the angle of sunlight at different latitudes all reduce actual synthesis, regardless of how sunny the climate is on paper.
Why retesting timing matters
Vitamin D levels change slowly. Retesting a week after starting supplementation won't show much movement — most guidance points to rechecking after 8 to 12 weeks to see whether a supplementation plan is actually working.
